Well, my father emigrated here from Moscow, and he's Jewish, so my ideas of Russia are obviously filtered by that. Generally I see it as a relatively poor country, stagnating, old population plagued by problems with alcoholism and drug use, relatively homogenous, sort of close minded, but some of the most beautiful and formdiable cultural artifacts. I mean one can't read (Tolsty/Dostoevski/Pushkin/Pasternak,) or listen to (Rachminoff/Tschiakovsky,) or god, just watch ballet, and continue to make stupid little Russian jokes. Also I love kvas but Americans hate it.
