It depends on local custom. In some countries, areas or cities you can see fences everywhere.
Some residential zones have fences in front and behind houses. Even if the enclosed garden is very small. Others have no fence at all. Instead of that those show other seperations, like flower beds or a differently trimmed lawn.
In the countryside the situation would be the same. I remember when touring England I was never able to find a place to stop on the side of the road. Fences and walls everywhere. I had to drive to the next village to leave my car. In other countries there are no visible borders at all.
May be the first boundaries derive from stones picked off the fields and piled up on the side.
And what about China? Why do chinese always build a wall around their home?
