How many kanji should i know to live and work in Japan? (^.^)

Yes. If you know about 2000, you can read most of newspaper articles and books. Elementary school kids learn to READ about 2000 in six years. (But they don't learn to WRITE all of them. ) Also, about 2000 kanji will be necessary to pass JLPT level1.
