I think it's important not to try too high a level too soon. Listen to both the easy and the more difficult things and listen to a lot of different things. Here are three sites. The first two are written for learners. You should always listen to the sound file a few times and then look at the text if you can't understand something. Beginning (Am English): On the following site all of the words are pronounced very slowly and clearly. It might not be "natural speech" but I think this helps beginners a lot. (If anyone knows something like this for learning Spanish, I would love to see it.) http://www.spotlightradio.net/ Intermediate: (Br English) The speaking rate on this site is a little faster, but it's still very clear. You can hear all of the parts of the words. http://www.breakingnewsenglish.com/ Advanced: (Am English) This is the US public radio website. These are native speaking reporters. The people they interview usually speak quickly and with their accent. A lot of the audio files have the text too but not all of them, and sometimes the text is a little different from the audio. Nice question, you are "the key"... now, go and make it happen. There's no magic, you just have to "train your ear" and it's not gonna happen tomorrow, takes time ! If you are speaking to someone and if they are speaking too quickly, just ask them "Would you please speak more slowly." It's important for you to hear every word clearly. If you don't understand a word that they said, just say, "I'm sorry, I didn't understand that word. Please say it again." If they repeat the word and you still don't understand, just say, "Would you please spell that word?" These questions are polite, so you don't have to worry about offending the speaker.
