it would depend on the context, just like in english. In teatro means "inside the theatre", stressing out the fact of being inside a building a teatro and al teatro roughly mean the same, but "a teatro" also have a more generic meaning, such as "a teatro non si parla" ("in the theatre you must not speak") or "vado a teatro", meaning "im going to see a performance", rather than "vado al teatro" that means "im going to the building (because i have a date nearby)"
