i can say "happy new year''. so what about "merry new year"?

The word "merry" is usually used for "Merry Christmas". Those in the UK may say "Happy Christmas", but you usually say "happy new year", not "merry new year". There isn't a specific reason, it's just how the holiday greeting tends to be and it's the idiom of it.

应该是约定成俗的说法。例如:happy Christmas,大家都知道句子意思,语法也没有错,但是没人这么说。
