can the word "film" be either movie or TV show?

No film means movie, although a tv show can last up to 60 minutes long it does not come under the same catagorie

I agree with Allison, it has to do with the length of the showing. We wouldn't think of a TV show if you said, "I'm going to watch a film".

As the others have said, film is the same as movie. I would say that film is the more formal way to refer to a movie. Usually in everyday conversation people will say movie.

Yes film only equals movie, not TV (except if it is a movie being shown on TV, that exists as a movie outside of TV). I think it also usually is used to speak of more serious movies. Myself I would not say "film" to talk about a really cheap or bad movie. But, in general film and movie are synonyms. Hope that helps...
