There are various explanations given but the most common seems to be that the numbers come from the numbers on a clock. Orginally each set took about 15 minutes so 15, 30, 45 was then shortened to 40 and 60 became 'game'. 'Love' comes from the French word l'oeuf meaning egg as an egg looks like a zero. And 'deuce' somes from the French 'deux' (2) because two points remain to win the game.
