Ramadan is observed after a period of twenty eight, twenty nine or thirty days of fasting from the first sighting of the first moon of the month of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, to the first full moon of the tenth month of Shawwal .During this period of fasting, Muslims all over the world fast with great devotion.This fast is called by the Arabic word 'saum'.During the fast, no food is consumed from dawn to dusk.Fasting leads to the realization that hunger is cruel and the attitude to help the poor.During this time the obligatory alms called 'Zakat' and the non obligatory alms called 'Sadaka' are given.Children under the age of 6, the sick persons, the elderly, etc do not need to fast.
