My opinion on learning a second language in the early years: I agree that learning different languages at an early age helps with healthy development and has many cognitive and social benefits. We know that language and communication skills are important to the overall development of young ones. Being able to freely express ideas and interact with people are some of the foundations of a child’s development. By learning different languages, a child can hone his or her skills in these areas. Some people are concerned that learning a second language from a young age would cause confusion in the child and hence hamper development, but the opposite is true. Studies have shown that as children grows older and begins to understand more things, they will be able to distinguish between the different languages they have been exposed to. This is true from my personal experience. I grew up in a multilingual country and learnt three languages from young. While it was tough juggling them at times, I'm quite happy with the result. Sometimes, I even wish I knew more! My schoolmates and I are living proof that it is beneficial for children to be exposed to different languages from young. It is harder in monolingual countries, though. As a teacher, I've helped my child students with this. Picking a good teacher is important to create interest in the child and help him or her learn the effective and engaging way. I'm grateful to my teachers and hope I can be a good teacher like them to my students :) If you ask me whether children should learn a second language or two in the early years, I'd say, "Yes, definitely!" :)
