A minha família é de origem irlandesa com raízes no noroeste desse pais. Se falava gaélico por ali quando o meu avô deixou a sua pátria para ir a Escócia. Não sei se ele falou gaélico, porém é curioso, dado as relações turbulentas entre os dois países, que todos nossos nomes são de origem inglesa. O meu primeiro nome, o de meu bi-avô, foi o de muitos reis da Inglaterra, conquistadores detestados da Irlanda. “Edward” vem das palavras anglo-saxãos, que significam “guardiã da resma”. O sobrenome “Clarke” é a versão inglesa da palavra latina “clericus”, o seja “clèrigo”. Eu gostaria de pensar que um de meus antepassados, enfurecido por paixão, esqueci o seu voto de castidade para dar origem à nossa família. A realidade foi provavelmente que era um clèrigo em ordens menores sem voto de castidade. Ele ganhou a vida usando a sua habilidade de ler e escrever.
