English in 5 minutes! We speak about gradable and non-gradable adjectives, what these are, and which are best for Business English! Book an Italki lesson with us: Rachel: https://teach.italki.com/teacher/1394345 Paul: https://www.italki.com/teacher/1657616 Adjectives are words that describe things, nouns, and they can be divided into two types: gradable or non-gradable. But what does that mean? Well, most adjectives are gradable, and you're probably familiar with a lot of these. Perhaps you learned them in opposite pairs, such as hot and cold, big and small, or good and bad. For these we can have different levels of quality, we can make them stronger or weaker by using words like very, really, a bit, or rather - a bit cold, very cold, or rather cold. These are the adjectives that we use when we are making comparisons. Your office is a lot smaller than mine, but my salary is a lot bigger than yours. We also use them as superlatives. She’s the strongest team leader that I know. Plus, you can use them with ‘too’. It’s too hot to work today. Other adjectives have a meaning which is absolute or extreme, so cannot be made stronger or weaker, nor be used in comparisons or as superlatives. These are the non-gradable ones, such as amazing, awful, or boiling. The gradable adjective ‘cold’ can be an un-gradable ‘freezing’. ‘Small’ can be ‘tiny’. And ‘tired’ can be ‘exhausted’. So, with non-gradable adjectives you can't use a quantifier, you cannot say ‘I'm very exhausted’ or ‘I'm very freezing’. No. You are either ‘very tired’, or ‘exhausted’, ‘very cold’ or ‘freezing’. However, you can still make non-gradable adjectives even more extreme by making use of adverbs like completely or absolutely. I’m completely exhausted. It’s been absolutely freezing in the office today. They can be difficult to learn, and you’ll need to memorise them, but the good news is that you can use the word really with both gradable and non-gradable adjectives to reinforce their meaning.

Tonight, hundreds of thousands of snowflakes are floating above a cute village. Among these snowflakes there’s one the size of a small pot plant. It’s twirling and spinning like a beautiful ballet dancer. This snowflake’s name is Lola. She has just been joined by her rich green fairy friend named Fairy. “Lola, I’m sorry to disturb you right before sleep... But I had to come see you. The wedding date has been moved. We must have it in one week’s time. Do you think the dress will be ready?” “One week? Sure thing,” says Lola. “I’ll work on it during the (yawn) weekend. You have nothing to worry about.” “Oh Lola, you’re the best! Thank you! Here, let me take you to the ground—you’re tired—I can take you there in a few minutes.” Fairy takes Lola in her arms to flies towards the village. But something isn’t right. The wind is becoming stronger and colder. Fairy is trying her best to fly straight, but the wind is pushing her to the left and to the right. The little green light is struggling against the wind. A storm is coming.

Mr. Fat wakes up from a deep and enjoyable sleep. He rolls out of bed, leaving behind him a mattress covered with money. He walks over to his bedroom mirror and wipes oil off his face. “You are looking very handsome today,” says Mr. Fat, speaking to himself. “You are doing such a great job at ruling Planet Meat. Everyone loves and respects you. This planet is so lucky to have you.” Looking at his delicious meat hamburger, Mr. Fat says “Oh my, I’m starving. I can’t wait for breakfast. I’m going to eat my own meaty, juicy body! Hah!” Mr. Fat lives in a giant house made of meat, vegetables and potato chips. He is the boss of the whole meat planet. He became the boss because he has the biggest, toughest belly. Whenever someone tried to punch Mr. Fat, meat flew out of his belly and attacked his opponent. The fat hamburger walks over to the window. He opens his lettuce curtains and he almost faints in shock. “OH MY GOD!” screams Mr. Fat. He can’t believe what he’s seeing. “It’s raining tomato sauce! Yuuuuk!!”
