家庭聚会

En un entorn molt llunyà, més concretament a la selva, diversos animals convivien feliçment en un entorn salvatge. Però allà també hi vivia un lleó molt golafre, el rei de la selva, que acostumava a menjar-se entre 3 i 4 animals cada dia. Un dia, farts de viure espantats, tots els animals de la selva van organitzar una revolta i van anar a buscar el lleó.
– Accepto que soc una mica golafre, però necessito menjar animals per poder mantenir-me viu i fort. – Va dir el lleó.
Els animals semblaven entendre el que deia, però no podien permetre perdre tants amics cada dia. Finalment, van proposar un pacte que deia que el lleó només es menjaria un animal al dia. El lleó va remugar una mica, però finalment el va acceptar. La promesa no va durar gaires dies i, en un atac de golafreria, el lleó (que ja s’havia menjat un estruç aquell dia) va voler menjar-se un petit conill que passejava camí cap al seu cau. El conill havia vist un pou ple d’aigua uns quants metres enrere i com que era molt presumit s’havia estat mirant al reflex de l’aigua durant una bona estona. Però a part de presumit també era molt valent i va dir al lleó que coneixia un altre lleó que anava dient per la selva que era més poderós. Com podeu comprendre, al rei de la selva no li van agradar gens aquestes paraules, i va demanar al conill que el portés cap on estava aquest lleó.
Van anar caminant i el conill va demanar al lleó que s’aturés davant del pou. Assenyalant el reflex de l’aigua del pou amb el dit, li va dir:
-Mira'l, és aquí.

Around the world, "Kiwi" is a popular nickname for New Zealanders, and people from New Zealand will often call themselves "Kiwis" too. For most New Zealanders, the word Kiwi is a positive and friendly nickname — but where did it come from?

The name actually comes from the kiwi: a fluffy bird that has a round body, a long beak and cannot fly. It is only found in New Zealand.

While the bird was already used on New Zealand's stamps and money by the late 19th century, it was first used to represent New Zealand in 1904 — when it was used in a cartoon to represent the country's rugby team. After that, the bird was often shown in cartoons to represent the country.

During World War I, soldiers from New Zealand who were fighting in Europe wore an image of the bird on their uniforms. "Kiwi" became a popular nickname for these soldiers, and it continued to be used after the war.

So the people and the birds don't get mixed up, "Kiwi" as a nickname for New Zealanders is usually written with a capital K, while the bird's name is usually written with a small k: "kiwi."

The kiwi fruit, which is originally from China, is also named after the bird. In 1959, fruit exporters in New Zealand started calling it "kiwifruit" because its fluffy, brown skin looks similar to the fluffy bird.

However, it is important not to mix up Kiwi people, kiwi birds and the kiwi fruit! Although the fruit is usually just called "kiwi" in other parts of the world, New Zealanders only ever call it "kiwifruit."
