Every culture has a layer of practices its members follow without necessarily believing, and that outsiders either miss entirely or misread. Kerala has a rich version of it. The framing matters: this class does not tell you what to believe. It tells you what is done, and what the words are — so that when somebody hesitates at a doorway, or will not hand you scissors point-first, you understand what just happened. ഭാഗ്യം (bhaagyam) luck, good fortune · നിർഭാഗ്യം (nirbhaagyam) misfortune ഐശ്വര്യം (aishwaryam) prosperity and auspiciousness — a quality of rightness that attaches to a house, a person, an occasion. A key word. ശുഭം (shubham) auspicious · അശുഭം (ashubham) inauspicious മുഹൂർത്തം (muhoortham) the auspicious moment, calculated astrologically, which governs weddings, housewarmings and the start of anything significant ദോഷം (dosham) a fault, flaw or affliction നിലവിളക്ക് (nilavilakku) the traditional brass lamp, lit at dusk in many homes Lighting the lamp at the start of an event — a school function, a business opening, an inauguration — is standard across communities in Kerala, and it is an honour given to the senior guest.
