一人の下人が、羅生門の下で 雨やみを待っていた。
広い門の下には、この男のほかに誰もいない。
ただ、ところどころ丹塗りの 剥げた、大きな円柱に、
きりぎりすが 一匹とまっている。
羅生門が、朱雀大路にある以上は、この男のほかにも、
雨やみをする市女笠や 揉烏帽子が、もう二,三人は
ありそうなものである。
それが、この男のほかには誰もいない。
なぜかというと、この二,三年、京都には、
地震とか 辻風とか 火事とか 饑饉とかいう災いが
つづいて起こった。
そこで洛中の さびれ方は 一通りではない。
