Descrição
Indian English speakers often put the topic of a sentence first, then say something about it: "This file, I sent it yesterday." "My manager, he is very strict." "Coffee, I don't drink." "Mumbai, I have been only once." This "topic first, comment after" pattern, sometimes called fronting or topicalisation, is found in many varieties of spoken English, but research on Indian English shows it is especially frequent and flexible. Another related pattern puts "there" or "only" at the end: "Problem is there" (There is a problem), "Some doubt is there" (I have a question), "Food is there, take" (There's food, help yourself). What you will learn: • Topic first, comment after • Why put the topic first • "Is there" at the end: existence • "Only", "Also" and "Itself" after the focus • Other word-order patterns • A simple listening method • Practice: decode the sentence • Listening strategies • Self-check questions to test your ear Level: B1–B2. Self-study: listen, then take the quizzes. Audio voiced with AI from an original script by Dr. Rashmi R Nair.
