Reported Speech in Malayalam — Part 3: He Said, She Asked, It's Called | Learn Malayalam #167
Descrição
Most adult conversation is relaying: she told me, he said, they asked whether. Malayalam does all of it with one small word.
എന്ന് goes after the quoted words and before the verb of saying, and the quote itself never changes: no shifting I to he, no moving the tense back. You build reported statements, questions and yes-no questions with -ഓ, learn fused forms such as വരുമെന്ന്, and use എന്ന് തോന്നുന്നു as a soft 'I think'. You also get the naming use, X എന്ന് പറയും, and ഇതിനെ എന്ത് പറയും?, the best vocabulary question there is.
