How to Learn Malayalam on Your Own — A Daily Practice That Works | Learn Malayalam #335
Descrição
A daily Malayalam practice that does not depend on a teacher, built on what is actually known about how people acquire languages. This one is a system — write it down, or listen twice.
I am Dr. Reshmi R. Nair, an applied linguist from Kerala. I have taught hundreds of learners to speak Malayalam as it is actually spoken.
THE FOUR THINGS THAT HAVE TO HAPPEN
Every method that works is doing these four. Every method that fails has dropped one.
1. INPUT YOU MOSTLY UNDERSTAND
Not material that baffles you, and not material beneath you. Material where you follow the shape and miss some of the detail. That is where acquisition happens.
2. OUTPUT
Producing language, badly, out loud, with the risk of being wrong. You cannot listen your way to speaking, for the same reason you cannot read your way to swimming.
3. FEEDBACK
Someone or something telling you that you were wrong, soon enough that you still remember what you said.
4. REPETITION SPACED OVER TIME
Not repetition in a block — repetition with gaps. This is the one almost every self-taught learner drops, and it is the one with the strongest evidence behind it.
WHAT THIS LOOKS LIKE ON AN ORDINARY DAY
Listen to something slightly above your level and do not stop to look words up. Say sentences out loud, alone, including the ones you are unsure of. Write down the three phrases you wanted and did not have. Review yesterday's, and last week's, not just today's. Keep the session short and keep it daily; thirty minutes every day beats four hours on Sunday, and it is not close.
And the honest part: a learner working alone can get input, output and repetition. Feedback is the one that needs another human.
Which of the four are you missing right now? Comment — that is your bottleneck.
