Malayalam's Language Family and Its Two Words for We | #343
Descrição
Malayalam belongs to the Dravidian family — around 26 languages and roughly a quarter of a billion speakers. Four have long literary traditions and official status: Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.
South Dravidian holds Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada, plus Tulu around Mangalore, Kodava in Coorg, and the small Nilgiri languages — Toda, Kota, Irula, Badaga. South-Central holds Telugu, the largest by speakers. And then North Dravidian holds the fact that makes this family interesting to everybody: Brahui is a Dravidian language, and it is spoken in Balochistan, in Pakistan — about two thousand kilometres from the rest of the family.
What the relatives share, all of which you already know as Malayalam: verb at the end, suffixes stacked in order, postpositions instead of prepositions, retroflex consonants, relative participles instead of relative pronouns, dative subjects for experience and possession, and a rational/irrational noun class rather than masculine and feminine.
And one English simply does not have. Malayalam — Manglish — English:
നമ്മൾ — nammal — we, INCLUDING the person you are speaking to
ഞങ്ങൾ — njangal — we, EXCLUDING them
നമ്മൾ പോകാം — nammal pokaam — let us go, you and I
ഞങ്ങൾ പോകാം — njangal pokaam — we are going, and you are not coming
English makes you guess which "we" someone meant. Malayalam settles it in the pronoun.
Slow and clear, for English speakers, heritage learners and the Malayali diaspora. No prior classes needed.
