Descrição
An Onam sadya on a banana leaf, and a small domestic mystery, in slow and simple Malayalam. This is where you meet the past tense properly. The present ends in -ഉന്നു; past endings vary (-ഇ, -ച്ചു, -ത്തു, -ന്നു), so learn each past form alongside its present, as children do. You also get plurals with -കൾ, and ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു (there was) and ആയിരുന്നു (was). Each episode works the same way: the story line by line with English, the grammar point, then the story again at speed with no English. Don't skip that last pass. Words and phrases in this class: ഇന്ന് ഓണം ആണ് (innu onam aanu) – today is Onam അമ്മ സദ്യ ഉണ്ടാക്കി (amma sadya undaakki) – mother made a feast ഞങ്ങൾ ഇലയിൽ ചോറ് കഴിച്ചു (njangal ilayil choru kazhichu) – we ate rice on a leaf സദ്യയിൽ പല കറികൾ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു (sadyayil pala karikal undaayirunnu) – there were many curries in the feast കുഞ്ഞു പായസം കുടിച്ചു (kunju paayasam kudichu) – Kunju drank payasam സദ്യ നന്നായിരുന്നു (sadya nannaayirunnu) – the feast was good ഉണ്ടാക്കി (undaakki) – made കഴിച്ചു (kazhichu) – ate കുടിച്ചു (kudichu) – drank കറികൾ (karikal) – curries ഇല (ila) – leaf In this class: • Story 7: the Onam sadya • Story 8: the lost slipper • Grammar: the past tense, learned in present-past pairs • Plurals with -കൾ, and 'there was' vs 'was', then both stories at speed Quizzes below.
