Some words resist translation not because the idea is exotic, but because a language chose to name it as one thing. This class collects Malayalam's hard-to-translate words and what each one says about how the language carves up the world: മനസ്സ്, mind and heart with no seam between them; പ്രവാസി, the one living away who is missed; തിരക്ക്, the same word for a crowded room and a crowded diary; സാരമില്ല, the consolation that fits every context; and പോയിട്ട് വരാം, the promise to return built into a goodbye. Along the way it points back to the classes where each word first appeared.
