Descrição
You can follow a slow, polite speaker, but when a Malayali family discusses a plan, everyone talks at once, words shrink, subjects vanish and people cut in before the last speaker has finished. English speakers listen for the full textbook form, such as പോകാം (pokaam) = let's go, and miss the fast form പോവാം (povaam) that people actually say. Here you hear an invented family scene at full speed, then decode its contractions, dropped words, interruptions and tone shifts, and answer three questions: who wants what, what was implied, who gave in. In this episode: • The scene at full speed • Contractions: the shrunken words • Dropped words • Cutting in and holding the floor • Tone shifts and the listener tasks • Language bridge • Practice • Self-check questions with answers Key phrases from this episode: പോവാം (povaam) = let's go, from പോകാം (pokaam). A k between two vowels softens to v. ശരിയാ (sheriyaa) = that's right, from ശരിയാണ് (sheriyaanu). എന്താ (enthaa) = what is it, from എന്താണ് (enthaanu). നിക്ക് (nikku) = stay, wait, from നിൽക്ക് (nilkku). ഒന്ന് നിക്ക് (onnu nikku) = hang on, wait a second ഞാൻ ഒന്ന് പറയട്ടെ (njaan onnu parayatte) = let me say something ഒന്ന് കേൾക്ക് (onnu kelkku) = just listen അതല്ല (athalla) = no, that's not it; but പോരേ? (pore?) = isn't that enough? Happy now? Said after a concession. Learn Spoken Malayalam at Home: a complete course in everyday spoken Malayalam for English speakers.
