Collocations: make a decision, heavy traffic, strongly agree | IELTS #044
Descrição
Level B2 (approx. band 5.5-6.5) · Academic and General Training
You know the words, but the combination sounds wrong. "Do a mistake." "Strong rain." "Highly agree." Every word is real English, yet the partner is wrong, and an examiner hears it immediately. Words that naturally go together are called collocations.
In this episode:
• What a collocation is, and why it matters
• Verb plus noun
• Adjective plus noun
• Adverb plus adjective or verb
• Model
• Language bridge
• Practice
• Self-check questions with answers
Key points:
• a collocation is a natural partnership, and examiners reward it.
• learn the verb and the noun together as one unit.
• when you learn a noun, also learn the two or three adjectives that usually go with it.
• adverbs have favourite partners too; strongly agree, highly effective, widely available.
