Today's word is to focus. Focus. It can be a noun. Focus… to have a focus…. or it can be a verb to focus on something. Now it's very common in education when you're learning to focus on something, maybe you have a project at work you like to focus on. To have a focus. Or to focus on.

みなさんー！お元気ですかー？私は最近風邪気味でした。もう6月ですね。最近、去年の引っ越し準備を思い出します。アパート探しをしていたのが、もう1年前なのかと思うと本当に早いです。今年の夏も日本帰国を少し考えたのですが、日本の夏は暑すぎるので、来年のラマダン休みに帰国しようかなと思っています。 
さて、今日は「日本とサウジのバイト文化」について話します。日本では学生や若者がバイトすることは普通です。バイトとはアルバイトの略で、本業や学業の合間に、正社員よりも短い時間で収入を得る雇用形態のことです。「バイト」と「パート」は基本的には似ていますが、日本では学生や若者の仕事を「バイト」、主婦向けの短時間勤務を「パート」と呼ぶことが多いです。 バイトやパートの仕事は飲食店やスーパー、コンビニなどの接客業が多いですが、イベントスタッフやオフィス事務もあります。
参考までに私のバイト歴を話しますね。覚えている限りでは、大学４年間で８つの仕事を経験しました。私は大学１年生の時に金沢から東京に大学進学のために引っ越し、一人暮らしを始めました。日本では地元から離れた場所に進学、就職するのは普通なので、大学生くらいから一人暮らしを始める人が多いです。私の大学は国立で私立大学と比べると学費は安かったのですが、それでも東京のアパート代を含む生活費と学費は両親にとっては大きな負担だと思いました。親に「働いて」と言われたわけではないのですが、大学生になって２か月目くらいからバイト探しをはじめ、住んでいる場所の近くのお弁当屋さんでレジ係として働きはじめました。１年生の時はチアリーディング部と国際交流サークルに入っていたので、結構忙しかったのですが、多分週１０時間程度働いていたと思います。そのお弁当屋さんは家と大学から近くて便利だったんですが、たまにヘルプで違う店舗で働かなければならないことがあって、それが嫌で８か月くらいでやめたと思います。そのあとは、お弁当屋さんと同じ場所にあるマクドナルドで働きました。お弁当屋さんは夕方以降の勤務でしたが、マクドナルドは平日朝７時から３時間の勤務で、そのあとの授業中は眠かったです。マクドナルドで働くのは悪くなかったのですが、給料が安かったので、もう少し給料が高いところで働こうと思って、やめました。そのあとバーや居酒屋で働いて楽しかったですが、夜遅いのでそれはそれで結構大変でした。その間、接客業以外にチラシ配りにも挑戦しました。これはいろんな学校の近くに重いチラシを抱えて一人で行って、親にひたすらチラシを配るという仕事です。一人でするので心細いですし、もらってくれないと悲しいですね。そして、大学３年生の途中で天職が見つかりました。渋谷にあるブラジル料理店での接客の仕事です。ポルトガル人をはじめとする外国人スタッフが多く、渋谷なので外国人客も多かったので、とてもインターナショナルな雰囲気でした。外国や外国語が好きな私にとって、とても合っていました。スタッフもみんないい人ばかりでしたし、たまに芸能人や日本やブラジルのサッカー選手も来たりして、毎回働くのが楽しかったです。大都会で働く醍醐味ですね。大学生の最後のほうには、知り合いの紹介で小さな会社での事務作業を手伝いました。
