Morphology of "xin chào"
Hello,
I know xin chào means roughly "to give a greeting" so I am rather interested in the morphology here.
Xin = 1. Verb (to ask, to request etc.)
2. Noun (request/question?)
Chào = 1. Verb (to greet etc)
2. Noun (greeting)
Thus, technically one could thus translate xin chào as "to ask to greet/to ask greeting/asking greeting/asking"
to greet".
Have I understood this correctly?
Cám ơn

Sounds interesting. I never really break the work “xin chao” into 2 words and consider those separated words. I just use it as a greeting naturally. Additionally, we have chào and xin chào. Xin chào (hello) sounds more formal. Chào (hi) sounds informal. I like your thought though.

I never morlophogy of "xin chào", but by my opinon, this word is shortened of the sentence "i would like to give you greeting"
"Xin" in this case is not mean asking something, its meaning is as a polite suggestion
