In Japan there are a few traditions to welcome babies and pray for their healthy growth during the year after their birth.
Firstly, after around one month birth, parents go to a shrine or a temple near their home to tell the gods about the birth of their baby and pray for him. It’s called ‘Omiya Mairi’. The baby wears a “Sunday Best” on that day.
Secondly, 100 days after the birth, parents prepare a meal with traditional Japanese food for the baby to wish him/her not to suffer from hunger in the future. It is called ‘Okuizome’. However, since the baby cannot eat anything yet, it is just a formality.
Finally, a year after the baby’s first birthday, another interesting thing called ‘Tanjo Mochi (Birth Ricecake)’will wait for the baby. They ‘ll carry a big rice cake on their back which means that their parents wish them to become strong.
These are the main traditions related to birth in Japan but please note that there are some differences depending on the areas.
