It was sunny today. My cousin was celebrating his birthday and having a get-together at a restaurant. Everything was normal until the waitress served us an unusual dish: turtle soup. It was very novel to me. I’m not fussy about food, but I have to admit that I never expected to see a turtle cut in half on the dinner table. Anyway, the soup didn’t taste peculiar. I wouldn’t have known what it was if I hadn’t seen the residue. Mom seemed amazed, but I guess it was just a psychological effect. People love to order bizarre food on special occasions.

It was sunny today. My cousin was celebrating his birthday and hosting a get-together at a restaurant. Everything was normal until the waitress served us an unusual dish—turtle soup. It was completely new to me. I’m not picky about food, but I have to admit, I never expected to see a turtle cut in half on the dinner table.
That said, the soup itself didn’t taste unusual. I wouldn’t have known what it was if I hadn’t seen the remains. Mom seemed amazed, but I think it was just a psychological effect. People love ordering bizarre food on special occasions.
1. “Having a get-together” → “Hosting a get-together”: More precise and natural.
2. “Very novel to me” → “Completely new to me”: “Novel” is correct but less commonly used in this context.
3. “I’m not fussy about food” → “I’m not picky about food”: “Picky” is more natural in casual conversation.
4. “Didn’t taste peculiar” → “Didn’t taste unusual”: “Unusual” fits better for describing taste.
5. “The residue” → “The remains”: “Remains” is more commonly used for food leftovers.
6. “Love to order” → “Love ordering”: “Love ordering” is the more natural structure.
