As many of you may know yesterday was orthodox Easter. Yesterday, I got to celebrate with a Greek family for the first time and it was as wonderful as you could imagine. It was also similar and yet a world apart from what I'm used to. Here in Greece, they had a grill going with a whole lamb roasting on top and people chatted and drank around the grill before having a late lunch.
I grew up in Egypt and while it is a mostly Muslim country so most people don't celebrate Christian Easter, there is an ancient Egyptian tradition of celebrating the coming of spring on the Monday that follows Orthodox Easter. On this day, Sham el Nessim, which translates to smelling the breeze, people gather for a picnic and eat fermented fish and salted sardines with spring onions.
So the similarity was the warm, family support. The difference was the food culture. How do you celebrate Easter or the coming of spring in your culture?
