Hello English Students! Below I have a mini lesson about the indefinite articles for you! If you enjoy it, please consider checking out my schedule and booking a trial session with me! ^^

Picking which indefinite article to use can be tricky, depending on the sound of the word. Some words start with a consonant sound, some with a vowel sound, and some start with a consonant letter that is silent but sounds like a vowel! 😤
For example, you might say, “I saw a fox out in the woods the other day.” Here, we use “a” because the letter “f” in “fox” has a consonant sound. But what if we add an adjective before the word “fox,” like the color “orange”?
Now the sentence becomes: “I saw an orange fox out in the woods the other day.”
Here, we use “an” because “orange” starts with a vowel sound.
Remember:
1. If a noun or adjective starts with a vowel sound, use “an.” (an apple, an hour)
2. If a noun or adjective starts with a consonant sound, use “a.” (a cat, a year)
3. If a noun or adjective starts with a consonant letter but is silent and makes a vowel sound (like “h” in “honor” or “hour”), use “an.” (an honor, an hour)
In the sentence below, which indefinite article should we use?
I went to the store to buy ____ green apple.
a
an
