Professor ProfissionalHave you watched the 2019 Indonesian movie "Gundala?" It’s about Gundala, one of the superheroes of the Bumi Langit Cinematic Universe, which is a fictional universe based on the characters from comics published by Bumi Langit Publisher since the 50s. Here is a summary of the movie and my thoughts.
Sancaka is the son of a poor factory worker. His father always tells Sancaka to fight for justice and the weak. And Sancaka respects his words. However, one day, Sancaka loses his father in a riot in front of his eyes. That’s when the thunder strikes Sancaka, but he manages to survive.
A year later, Sancaka’s mom abandons Sancaka and flees to the city. Left alone, Sancaka decides to go to the city himself. However, as soon as he arrives in the city, he gets chased by thugs because he tried to help a girl bullied by them. Fortunately, the homeless kid Awang springs up and saves Sancaka’s life. Feeling pity for young Sancaka, Awanag teaches Sancaka how to fight and tells him to stay silent about injustice if he wants to survive, which contradicts his father’s words.
Time passes, and Sancaka is now an adult who barely makes ends meet by working day and night; he’s indifferent about other people’s sufferings, following Awang’s words. However, one day, he decides to fight against thugs to save his neighbor, which leads him to the brink of death on the street. Then, the thunder strikes him again, like it did when was young, and it gives him supernatural power. The story continues.
The setting of "Gundala" is different from the typical superhero movies I've watched: A poor Asian kid growing into a superhero...in Indonesia. And it was really interesting. But the BIG downside is the lack of pleasing visual effects, which probably resulted from its low budget: "Ironman” was produced with a $140 million budget, while "Gundala" was with $2.11 million. So...yeah. Still, despite the disappointing FX, “Gundala” was pleasant to watch. So, try this movie if you are interested!
