They pushed open the door of the haunted house. The sentence above comes from an audio book called The adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain, retold by Little Fox on Youtube. The full sentence is: On Saturday afternoon, Tom and Huck pushed open the creaky door of the haunted house. It's a grammatical question. I wonder what is the role of 'open' here. You see, obviously, push is the motor verb of the sentence. I found phrases such as "push sb. to do", "push sb. +preposition", and I did find a phrase like "push something open/shut". But I cannot find a phrase like "push do". Could you help me work it out? Thank you in advance~

Similar phrases to illustrate this pattern: When you enter a room, you "turn on" the light. When you make a mistake with a pencil, you use an eraser to "rub out" the error. "take it slow and easy" "Hold me tight". ("tightly" would be more correct, but we often say "tight") The lake "froze solid" The business went broke. I was struck speechless I dressed up for the dinner He slammed shut the door (or slammed the door shut). I want my egg cooked "over light" (which means fry it on one side and then fry it briefly on the other side).

Listen to Britney Spears sing "Sometimes" which contains the line "All I really want is to hold you tight, treat you right, be with you day and night". This song shows how many millions of dollars one can earn by using bad grammar. Since "right" is both an adjective and adverb, the line contains only one mistake.

The grammar is comparable to causative verbs like "make" and "let" verb + object + adjective e.g. I made my friend happy e.g. I let the dog loose
