I don't understand these sentences. What do they mean? Could anyone explain them to me? "It seems to have become, unofficially, a bid to reach "herd immunity"- the situation in which the virus has run out of people to infect. This may be still some way off yet, with predictions that the situation will get quite a lot worse before it gets better."

This country wants to reach so called "herd immunity" - that is, when so many people have already had the virus, or they are vaccinated, so they have antibodies and the virus has nobody to infect. However, they say that there is a long way to that and that it is possible for the situation to first get worse and to get better after that. I hope this helped :)
