It was overcast today. This morning, Mom told me she would take me to a nice place after school. I was excited. But it turned out she was taking me to get another vaccine. How mischievous! I had been looking forward to it until MeeMaw came and asked Mom why we hadn’t headed to the clinic yet. What clinic? I quickly realized something was amiss. Mom had furtively told everyone about it except me, just to surprise me and make fun of it. I thought we were going to a party or something, but instead, it was an injection. She really got me bad.

Mom had secretly told everyone about it except me, just to surprise me and make a joke of it. I thought we were going to a party or something, but instead, it was an injection. She really got me bad.

Great. You can also say something was 'afoot' (something was happening or about to). I personally would also use 'secretly' here rather than 'furtively' as the latter makes me think of the manner in which she told them (which you did not witness). I'd also say 'make a joke of it' as 'make fun of' needs the object to be a person, meaning to laugh at someone, have fun at someone's expense.
