People still read, and they value real books - not just kindles and PDFs and blogs. I was quite surprised to see so many people sitting on benches outside in parks, in public places, reading 'real' books. This is much rarer in the UK where people are usually just looking at their mobile phones. Beauty and violence live side by side. You can go for a walk on a Sunday afternoon in the hills above Rio, yet hear gunshots from the favelas down below. It's amazing to travel for so long and so far from Europe, to find a place which is strangely European. Excess and deprivation live side by side. You can see huge luxurious mansions and visit churches which seem to be covered in gold leaf inside. You can also see people struggling to survive: living in hot, poorly built shacks, seeing violence on a daily basis. The middle classes are generally much more passionate about ideas than in many other countries: they care so much about art, culture, music, tradition, history...
