Professor Profissional"Remember, remember the 5th of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot!"
Every November 5th, the UK lights up for Bonfire Night (or Guy Fawkes Night),
Here’s why:
In 1605, a man named Guy Fawkes and a group of conspirators tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament to overthrow King James I.
They didn’t succeed. Guy Fawkes was caught, and to celebrate the King’s survival, bonfires were lit across the country.
The tradition lives on in the UK with bonfires, fireworks, and effigies of Guy Fawkes over 400 years later,
People gather to see the bonfires be lit and the sky explode in colour. We also enjoy treats like toffee apples.
One of the biggest celebrations is in Lewes in East Sussex. It is renowned for its grand parades and dramatic displays and is the most famous Bonfire Night event in the UK.
So, next November 5th, don’t miss out on this piece of British history that’s all about light, community, and remembering a plot that went boom — but not quite as planned.
