Is it important to learn Chinese Hanzi (汉字) by hand
Hello friends! Now a days with computers everywhere with pinyin being the general way to type out hanzi, is it really important to learn how to write them out by hand? I've heard that knowing how to write characters out by hand is a great way to learn them from muscle memory but so far I've never had a problem with that. To be able to write as much as I can type would require hundreds of hours of practice so is it really necessary for a foreigner to learn hanzi, or am I better off investing my time in other areas such as vocabulary or fluency? Do certain jobs / institutions require writing hanzi as a necessary skill? So far I figured it would be best if I just focused on memorizing more characters rather than learning the characters I already know's stroke order and radicals and components and blah blah blah.

If you are going to understand chinese and chiness cultrue well, you should use chinese characters more by hands. Chinese characters formed by chinese character's components, each components represents specific meaning that means a meaning of a character comes from the components. If you only memorize the pronunciations, you might not understand the meaning very well. Apart from that, most of the chinese poems use the implication of characters skillfully, it is not easy for person who don't know the character well to appreciate the mood.
by the way, PinYin is not the only way to type character on computer. There is another typing method called WuBi（五笔）which is typed by character's components.

Hey, man. I think it depends on what do you plan to do. From my point of view, you're right. Basically it's not that important for a foreigner to be able to write every characters you know. Speaking and reading is much more important than writing by hand. Writing might not be the key of communication. We write by hand much less than before, especially in work and formal moments, because of the using of computer. The funny thing is we frequently forget how to write some easy characters while holding a pen. By the way, you could easily find an assitant if it's necessary. One tip, practice your signature in Chinese, that would be helpful. Have a nice day.

If you just want to talk with Chinese, PINYIN will be fine. But if you want to learn Chinese, you'd better learn how to write HANZI. I know there are uncountable characters in Chinese. It seems difficult to write and remember. However almost 1,300,000,000 people are able to do that. So I believe you can make it to. that's my view.

If you want to live in Chinese speaking countries for a long time and you hope to read their newspapers or magazines, I consider that is a necessity for you to master Chinese character writing which is often related to your listening, reading and speaking.
However, if you just plan to stay in China for short time and all you want is to communicate with locals in Chinese, with no doubt you had better not waste much of your precious time in writing practice.
I consider it all depends upon why you learn Chinese and what your target is in learning Chinese.
