Beware of the polyglot

Do you want to become fluent in any language in two weeks? Don't worry, here you have the superpolyglot Lauridsen with his new method. If you do not become fluent after a month, you'll get back your money!!!

No, seriously, you won't.The incredibly smart-looking man in the picture is called Foster, and it seems that he forgot to return some book to the library 47 years ago.

I'm tired of this kind of advertisment. And what makes me really sick are polyglots. Now they even upload videos of themselves speaking several languages as a proof of thir habilities. WTF!!! What the hell they think they will prove by that?

Do you want an advice from someone who after years and years and years studying English and Japanese still hasn't become a polyglot? DON'T TRUST POLYGLOTS ! ! ! It is easy to become a polyglot in the Internet, but the most of the cases it is just FAKE. People trying to sell you a "method", a "book" or a "miracle".

Seriously, when you see the word "polyglot", better run away.

I am not a polyglot but I don't see why some people who are already advanced speakers of at least one other European language cannot immerse themselves in a new culture, focus solely on language learning, and reach an upper intermediate level in a new language in around a month.

On the other hand, there are people like me who learn a bit of Italian most days; I speak Italian twice a week, I have never lived in Italy, and I need to operate in English at a high level for my job.  I don't expect to make rapid progress but I'm happy to plod along.

@Affcionado - When you make broad generalizations about polyglots, or any group of people for that matter, you come off as biased and ignorant. In addition, polyglots are merely multi-linguists, so you are a polyglot yourself. Maybe you shouldn't say so many bad things about a group that you belong to.

There are millions of polyglots in the world. It makes no sense to think that I am talking about them all. I hope you can distinguish when I refer to real polyglots and «those polyglots».

The bad thing is that «those polyglots» have take control over the Internet, and now the mere «polyglot» word became overused and dirty. It can not be helped. ㄟ(ツ)ㄏ

Talking about fake polyglots, did anyone notice italki is now trying to get its users to buy Benny Lewis' books?

https://www.italki.com/languagehacking

I don't know what's funnier, the term "language hacking" itself or the fact that some people actually buy into that bullshit.
