Catcalling happens quite a lot in Tunisia. But, it stops at that, just words thrown. 

I never really saw or heard anyone complain about getting followed or anything.

I think you were overwhelmed by the people that were trying to make money honestly, lots of tourist have to deal with that cultural shock. Especially, that in Tunisia, our personal bubble is very small.

If you ever think about visiting again, you should contact a Tunisian, that way they could explsin every cultural difference so that you're not scared or surprised by it.

Katarina, were you walking in the souk? (The place where there's a lot of different shops?)

If you were, those men were not really meaning anything sexual or any kind of flirting. That's their job, they were trying to make money; either by being a guide and helping you around or by selling things from their stands or shops. 

Having a whole area following you around... Now i am really interested to know where in Tunisia did you go to. Countryside? City? Hotel complex? Dangerous areas?

Nop i was not accompanied by a male but a female.
People (women, men, kids, grandpas, tourists, locals, shop owners, cooks,  etc...) were randomly talking to us (me when i was by myself cause my friend was taking naps at the hotel) and i have received nothing but warm welcomes, tips on things to do, places to visit, food to eat and hilarious jokes to close a conversation.

I guess you it'd bad luck and i understand your frustration (same thing happened to me in Rome) but assimilating this to a whole culture is a bit too much.

Tunisia was one of my very first trip and I loved it. Locals were really nice and I brought a lot of great souvenirs from there. Also, the food was delicious.

@Katarina, I don't think following girls around is a "local customs" you need to chill with the prejudices....
