Alcoholic in Egyptian Arabic

Is سكير the best word to use in Egyptian Arabic for Alcoholic?  I want to be more clinical, not derogatory, with the word.

I want to write: هو كان سكير

He was an alcoholic.

Thanks,

I think that the word "سكير" is more formal than the expression "بيشرب خمرة كتير". Also, there are other expressions that give the same meaning such as "مدمن خمر" or "خمورجى", but the latter word is less formal than all of these expressions (low slang language).

You Can say

كان مدمن خمور / خمرة = he was addicted to alcohol

مُدمِن  = Addict

"This expression is more polite"

In Egyptian slang you Can also say "كان خمورجي"
 خَمُورجِي = Alcoholic

"This expression may hurt him"

سكير isn't the exact word we normally do use in Egyptian, you're right it might be a bit derogatory, However you could say هو كان بيشرب كتير or هو كان متعود يشرب كتير
