Is your culture 'warm' or 'cold'?

Cultures are often categorized as either 'warm' or 'cold'.

It is not a negative thing for either - it just tends to refer to the climates that these cultures originate from.

So, warm cultures focus on relationships above tasks/work, and don't tend to worry about time.

Cold cultures tend to value efficiency and respecting other people's time.

Warm cultures are more spontaneous, for example, in hospitality, and cold cultures prefer planning.

Sometimes, cities are seen to have cold cultures, and rural areas in the same country are seen to be warm.

There is obviously a lot more to this, but, based just on the above, where does your culture fit in?

@Rostam< I agree.  However, it does give people who are not familiar with cultural differences some broad categories, and understanding.  If a German goes to work in Brazil, for instance, he will understand that not being on time has another meaning than disrespect.  Otherwise, he may fume and fuss over things he does not understand.  Or, he may wonder why people give him wrong directions instead of understanding that people who get asked for directions feel the need to make the enquirer feel happy by having some form of answer - whether incorrect or not.  There you see relationship is primary, rather than accuracy.  If the German understands this, it will make him less frustrated.

The Philippines is a hot country and the Filipino culture is warm. People here are generally friendly, patient and hospitable- they would treat guests like family members. Filipinos love to kiss and hug people, and they would stand very close to the person they're talking to.

I like to meet new people and I'm friendly but I'm also a private person, so I can't say that I'm a typical Filipino because I don't really like it when I live with so many people and I prefer my neighbours to mind their own business. I also prefer to shake hands rather than hugging and kissing a person- most especially if I just met the person. Though I don't mind if people would hug me first. I just value personal space, nothing personal

My city's culture is way too warm for my taste.

Is there some kind of thermometer to measure such things? Do they measure in Celcius, Fahrenheit or maybe Kelvins? If we measure in Kelvin what culture is absolute zero and what culture is at Planck temperature?

Hi Karen

In Belgium, and I guess in most Western European countries, we have a cold culture - we like our privacy, are more introverted, like to be on time and focus on our job.

Regards

Karen
