If something contains, holds, or is filled with something else, it's a container. Boxes, bottles, bags, cans, packages, cartons, and buckets are examples of containers. "Perishables must be shipped in well-sealed, airtight containers."
A "box" strongly suggests a rectangular container. It can also mean a two-dimensional rectangle when something is supposed to go inside it. For example, in the game of baseball, there is a rectangular area drawn on the ground called the "batter's box;" the batter has to stand inside it while batting. On some kind of paper forms, including ballots for voting, there are squares called "checkboxes;" the person using the form is supposed to make a checkmark inside the box to mean "yes."
A "box of cheese" sounds odd because, in the United States, cheese is not usually packaged in boxes. You would say "a package of cheese."

They are similar.
A container is a more general word for something that can hold things.
A box is a type of container. Usually square or rectangular shaped.
If cheese comes in cardboard you could call it a box
If it is wrapped in soft plastic you would call it a pack or packet
