TOEFL iBT Reading Questions

There are a total of 10 question types of TOEFL iBT Reading questions. I don't want to overload you with all the types right now, but want to introduce them and give examples of each.

Type 1 is Factual Information Questions. This type of question focuses on facts, details, and definitions found in the reading profession.

Here are some ways to recognize Factual Information Questions.  They are often written in one of the following ways:

According to the paragraph, which of the following is true of X?

According to the paragraph, why did X do Y?

The Author's description of X mentions which of the following?

So if you see any of this type of wording in the question you know you have a factual information question.

Here are some tips for answering Factual Information Questions:

Refer back to the passage to know what is said about the subject of the question.

Eliminate choices that present information that is contradicted in the passage

Do not select an answer just because it is mentioned in the passage.

Here a sample Factual Information Question Passage:

Sculptures must, for example, be stable, which requires and understanding of the properties of mass, weight distribution, and stress. Paintings must have ridgid stretchers so that the canvas will be taut, and the pain must not deteriorate, crack, or discolor.  These are problems that must be overcome by the artist because they tend to intrude upon his or her conception of the work.  For example, in the early Italian Renaissance, bronze statues of horses with a raised foreleg usuallly had a cannonball under that hoof.  This wa done because the cannonball was needed to support the weight of the leg. In other words, the demands of the laws of phsics, not the sculptor's aestheic intentions, place the ball there.  That this device was a necessary structural compromise is clear from the that the cannonball quickly disappeared when sculptors learned how to strengthen the internal structure of a statue with iron braces (iron being much stronger than bronze)

Now here is the question:

According to paragraph 2, sculptors in the Italian Renaissance stopped using cannonballs in bronze statues of horses because

A) they began using a material that made the statues weigh less

B) they found a way to strnghten the statues internally

C) the aesthetic tastes of the public had changed over time

D) the cannonballs added to much weight to the statues

Go ahead and try to answer it.  Let's see how many answer correctly.
