If you could read anything, what would you like to read (in English)?

I came across an interesting discussion from about a month ago.  A student had asked for suggestions about a good short book in English.

I thought it would be a good idea to put together a list of suggestions.

Then I started wondering...

What topics are people interested in?

Do they want to read fiction or nonficiton?

Do they want classic fiction or popular fiction?

Do they want stories set in the past, future or present?

Let me know what your interests are!

Once I have a few replies, I'll start making a list of suggested books!

Everyone is different, of course, but I think bestsellers work for most people, especially if you're reading in a foreign language. Last week end I was on a short trip and had to spend some hours on a train/in a a waiting room. I really don't like to read serious staff on those occasions, so I had a couple of bestsellers on my tablet. I picked up Sophie Kinsella's "Confessions of a shopoholics" and soon found myself submerged into the story, I finished it up in 2 afternoons. No need to check anything in the dictionary, the plot is interesting and actually it was difficult to make a stop :)

On the other side, I believe detective stories (even the well-known classical ones like Agatha Cristie's or Arthur Conan Doyle's) are also very captivating and easy to follow.

popular fiction set in the present. I prefer books about the Second World War and traveling.

I suggest it shouldn't be a short book. I know people who learned English by reading Harry Potter. :)
