My name is Ozymandias , King of Kings

"And on the pedestal these words appear:
‚My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!‘"

 

These words , taken from a sonnet by Percy Bysshe Shelle , are indeed the words of a person puffed up with conceit and vanity . The sonnet , though brief , explores how all great empires and emperors are destined to decay : this self-proclaimed king of kings will eventually disappear from the memories of people and time and will remain as torsoless statue in the sand. 

The sonet reads:

 

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

 

It has always been a real pleasure for me to read about the rise and fall of empires and kingdoms. How they attained the top , ruled the nations and peoples , and then vanished like they were some fairy tale. I imagine myself speaking to a man from ancient Egypt , and I imagine him telling me : "Ramesses (Ozymandias) has proven himself powerful and mighty and will forever be remembered as a great man. His name will eternally be associated with might and glory! Women will name their children after him and men will dream about becoming what he has achieved." Upon which I will answer him : All that remains of Ramesses are a few stones and a decadent corpse. His reaction , I guess , would be surprise and a secret sense of joy , for men seldom celebrate the victories of their fellow men.

All that starts will end , and all that goes up will go down. As per the arabic proverb : 

"Every bird that goes up will , in the same fashion of its flight , land".
