You can´t ever speak in English if you don´t go to England

Everybody in Spain spend a lot money and time trying to learn English, but the results are awful. It is very difficult to find an Spanish older 40 than speak in Englihs fluently, unless he is working in an international company.

What is the problem? Is English so hard? Have we go to England to learn?

Good morning Salvador Toribio, (Me encanta tu apellido, ¡qué original! el mío es tan corriente.. hah)

Ok... I don't think that for learning English you have to go to England or any English speaking country. At least, that's what my experience tells me. I've never been to any English speaking country at all and whenever I open my mouth for speaking in English people keep asking me if I've been or lived in England. And I know lots, tons of people! who have been studying to London during summer and I can say without boasting, that my English is much better than theirs. Almost all of my schoolmates used to go on vacation to United States but I couldn't see their English really improved.

Nevertheless, I must say that for me it's easy to learn languages, because I really LOVE and enjoy saying words that don't exist in my mother tongue. So maybe that's the point, for learning a language you have to really WANT to learn that language, to fell and enjoy it. I mean, really, it makes the difference! I'm the kind of person that study languages by herself at home, and speaks alone, about anything so that I can feel comfortable with the language. And this summer I went to Japan, and the result was the same, Japanese people congratulating me because of my 'nice Japanese'.

I guess every person is like a different universe, and, as for it's easy to absorb languages, maybe other person needs another method.

Anyway, going to the country is always a good decision for improving the language but you have to feel the language if you really want to improve.

Sorry for the extension,
Best regards,
Lena.

PS: And we all have to keep in mind that we learn languages for communication. We are not robots repeating sentences and structures we've learnt by heart.

Peachy is right.

There is no magic conjuring up any miracle in front of you even you move to an English speaking country. The major concern in English learning lies in if you really practice your English at that place (overseas or domestically). I learned English at my secondary school and I determined to restart my English thoroughly last year because I need English to communicate with my clients very much. I found English I learned over past years is probably futile in some measure on account I fell short of practice in my listening and speaking. That is the most dreadful aweful thing which frustated me so much. I had to practice listening and speaking to enhance my English from very beginning. Nonetheless, it does not indicate it is impossible to make progress in my country where most people cannot or do not speak English.

Aside from that, I advise you may take an English official test to push yourself to study more efficiently and effectively.

Yes you can learn where you are:) If you did go abroad, avoid the mistake of many others who live with people from the same country or speak the same language as you. If you do many will just speak in Spanish for example as it is easier of course.

Speaking practise will really help you so much and singing songs.

Voice recording,

Here is the link to Gio's discussion he has used an online voice recorder to help practise speaking. He says he has really improved over the last 2 months, he had been learning English for many years before that. Since being on italki he is much happier with his English.

Italki also has a voice recorder when you use the message facility to contact others :) Many forget about this here!

All the best, and age does not matter. I know someone older than me, in their 80's who is learning a new language. Go for it!

Salvador, it's nice that you've already gotten such good advice! I would have told you even 10 years ago that it was necessary to go to an English-speaking country, but here we are on Italki!!! You no longer have to actually go to a foreign country to speak with natives anymore.

Getting on skype and speaking with native English speakers is like visiting England or America for an hour (or whatever) at a time and besides, you won't be able to hide and hang out with other Spanish speakers either! Half the time in English and half the time in Spanish and that's really all it takes.

You've come to the right place. Welcome!
