Is learning English a waste of time?
With the rapid development of technical tools for languages, people are easier to connect with each other no matter what languages they speak. These tools include automatic translation technology and text-to-speech technology. The language seems to be not a barrier for exchanging information worldwide anymore. And thus, some people consider that learning languages is a waste of time. However, I disagree with that opinion and I believe that learning languages is a part of study.
As Bacon stated, "Studies serve for delight, for ornament, and for abilities. Learning language can also play a same role with study on myself.
First and foremost, I personally enjoy learning language. I currently learn two foreign languages, which are English and Japanese, and I am happy to see my achievements of language usage from them. Although English has been a compulsory subject during my educational period, I still take it as a hobby to develop in my professional life. For me, learning languages serves as a great entertainment in my leisure time.
Secondly, constant learning of language enables me to stand out in some social occasions. Because I have acquired some knowledge of my target-languages’ countries, I am easier to develop relation with people who share common interest with mine.
Last but not least, a command of a language is helpful for both career and daily lives. Employers tend to take more considerations into those candidates who can speak a foreign language. Besides, people who have a good command of language can broaden their horizons or consider expand their business abroad. In some ways, the time you spent on learning language can be converted into opportunities or fortune in the future.
All in all, the merits of learning languages outweigh the consuming time of learning it. Therefore, I will never regard learning language as a waste of time.
