They were very delicious!

'Only' should correlate with something

     Ex. 'Only', 'though'. 'Only, however'. "Only, then

     "(I) only had chicken, however"

     "Only then did I realize that chicken was delicious" 

Keeping everything in the consistent tense is important ^q^ 

They and were correlate for past tense ^^
