A REVIEW - "A MONSTER CALLS" Hi I wrote this review to practise my writen skills so I attach my text. Thank you -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “A monster calls” is a fantasy novel by Patrick Ness. The story, set in the present day in England, it became very popular and was adapted to a film in 2016. The main character is Conor O’Malley, a thirteen years old child who lives with his divorced mother. He was suffering bulling and furthermore, his mother was ill because of cancer. But one day, after dreaming the same nightmare, someone came to visit him at 12:07 am. It was a yew monster who wanted to tell him tree stories and after that, Conor must tell it “his truth”. Conor didn’t fell terrified of the monster and he didn’t understand how stories could help her mother. During the novel, Conor’s mother got worse and had to hospitalize and he must live with his cold grandmother and pass time with his father who had emigrated to America and had a new family. With the stories, Conor learnt to understand himself and the situation that he was living and finally the monster forced Conor to confront his worst nightmare and saved him, not his mother. The great strength of the novel is how the monster’s stories can transmit lessons with simple tales, they have helped to my personal growth. Not only is the plot great, it is also well written and Spanish speakers can understand the vocabulary without problems. Personally, I recommend this novel to improve your English level and to enjoy with a good story. I want to watch the film and compare both and see if the first one is so good as the book.

Good. I put everything in the present tense because that is the way you began (keep things in the same tense, please), and because that is how book reviews are usually written. Very understandable. I think you should score yourself at a higher level.

The main character is Conor O’Malley, a thirteen years old child who lives with his divorced mother. He was being bullied and furthermore his mother was dying of cancer. But one day, after having a recurring nightmare, someone came to visit him at 12:07 am. It was a yew monster who wanted to tell him tree stories, after which Conor was to tell it “his truth.” Conor didn’t feel terrified of the monster and he didn’t understand how stories could help his mother. During the course of the story, Conor’s mother got worse and had to hospitalized and he had to go live with his cold grandmother and spend time with his father, who had emigrated to America and had a new family. Through the stories, Conor learned to understand himself and the situation that he was living in, and finally the monster forced Conor to confront his worst nightmare and saved him, not his mother.

The strong message of the novel is how the monster’s stories can transmit lessons with simple tales. They have helped to my personal growth. Not only is the plot great, it is also well written and Spanish speakers can understand the vocabulary without any problems.
