Hi there I have a question about the English word <dumpling>, I consider it more of a cultural question rather than a language question. Does the word "dumpling" refer to Chinese-style dumpling/jiaozi only? Whichever dictionary I use, the basic explanation of this word is "a small piece of dough" or something similar. And I've heard in different cultures they also have different types of dumplings.

Hi there, Irish/British dumplings are very different to Chinese-style dumplings. They are not usually stuffed with a filling. They are cooked in the final 20 minutes, in a stew or soup, before serving. They are made with flour, baking powder, suet (beef or vegetarian), and egg or water, depending on the recipe. The consistency is more like a (ideally) light fluffy type of bread. I love them. I also love jiaozi

‘Dumpling’ exists in the US. Using the word by itself, it’s flour-based and often served with gravy. Dumplings from Asian cuisines are quite different and we’d usually add other words describing the filling (pork e.g.) or method of cooking (fried e.g.)
