Professor ProfissionalHi Language Learners!
What was the first thing in your target language that you worked out the meaning of by yourself? 📝 Maybe a word or a phrase or a grammar point.
How did you feel when you realised you’d discovered something on your own? 👩🏻🎓
For me, it was realising that “[something]的时候”, meant “When [something happened/happens]”.
(Eg. 我在英国的时候…… Wǒ zài yīngguó de shíhòu…… When I was in England……) 🇬🇧
The people I was around were constantly saying “……的时候” and from the question “什么时候?” (When? or What time?), I knew 时候 was to do with time. 🕰 But I couldn’t make that fit with what I was hearing people say (“I was in England when” and “I was in England time”, don’t make sense 🤣).
And then one day 💡 🤯 I finally got it! And I felt like I was starting to finally get this language too. 💬
That was over five years ago, 🗓😱 and while my Chinese now is no where near as good as I’d like, that was the moment I realised that I could actually do something with this language, and I was making tangible progress. 📈I felt pretty awesome tbh. 🎉
What about you guys? 👩🏾🎓👨🏼🎓
What was something you managed to figure out by yourself? 🔍
I’d love to hear about it! Please let me know down in the comments below 👇🏻
Happy Learning Everyone! 🌸

The people I was around were constantly saying “……而已” I didn't have any idea what it meant.
And then, one day I realised it was related to “only” and “one”. So I tried to used it few times and it worked! Now I use it almost every time I say something in Chinese haha
